Georgia is a country in the Caucasus on the east coast of the Black Sea, at the meeting point of Eastern Europe and West Asia. It borders Russia to the north and northeast, the Black Sea to the west, Turkey and Armenia to the south and Azerbaijan to the southeast. The land is mountainous and lies almost entirely in the South Caucasus: the Greater Caucasus forms the northern border and holds the highest peak, Shkhara, and the volcanic Mount Kazbek, the Lesser Caucasus bounds the south, and the Likhi Range divides the country into western and eastern halves. The capital and largest city is Tbilisi. The official language is Georgian, a Kartvelian language unrelated to any other language family, and the currency is the lari. The climate is very diverse for so small a country: the west is humid subtropical with plentiful rain, the east is transitional between subtropical and continental, and the mountains have cool, wet summers and snowy winters.
