اليونان، ورسمياً الجمهورية الهيلينية، دولة تقع في معظمها في شبه جزيرة البلقان في جنوب شرق أوروبا، ولها آلاف الجزر الممتدة نحو آسيا الصغرى. يحدها البحر الأيوني غرباً، وألبانيا من الشمال الغربي، ومقدونيا الشمالية وبلغاريا شمالاً، وتركيا شرقاً براً وعبر بحر إيجه، ولها أطول ساحل في حوض البحر المتوسط. نحو 80 في المئة من أرضها جبال أو تلال، فهي من أكثر بلدان أوروبا جبلية، وأعلى قممها ميتيكاس في جبل أوليمبوس، وتنتهي يابستها جنوباً بشبه جزيرة البيلوبونيز، ومن أقاليمها كريت والجزر الأيونية وجزر بحر إيجه. عاصمتها وأكبر مدنها أثينا، ثم سالونيك وباترا، ولغتها الرسمية اليونانية، وعملتها اليورو. مناخها متوسطي في الغالب، شتاؤه معتدل إلى بارد ماطر، وصيفه حار جاف، أما المرتفعات في الشمال الغربي فمناخها ألبي بثلوج كثيفة في الشتاء.
Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a country located mostly on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe, with thousands of islands reaching towards Asia Minor. The Ionian Sea lies to the west, Albania to the northwest, North Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east by land and across the Aegean; it has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean basin. About 80 per cent of the land is mountains or hills, making it one of the most mountainous countries in Europe; the highest peak is Mytikas on Mount Olympus, the mainland ends in the Peloponnese peninsula, and its regions include Crete, the Ionian Islands and the Aegean Islands. The capital and largest city is Athens, followed by Thessaloniki and Patras. The official language is Greek and the currency is the euro. The climate is mainly Mediterranean, with mild to cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers, while the mountains of the northwest have an alpine climate with heavy winter snow.
